INFORMATION ABOUT SERVING ON ACoT'S
B. IDEN PAYNE NOMINATIONS COMMITTEE

THE B. IDEN PAYNE COMMITTEE
The committee is a cross-section of the Austin metropolitan theater community. Past members have included producers, directors, actors, writers, composers, designers, backstage crew and enthusiastic audience members. Committee size is not fixed, but is usually between 15 and 20.

The term of service coincides with the award season, September through August. New members are selected in early September. Members who resign mid-season are not replaced.

If you are interested, you will be interviewed by the committee on your background and enthusiasms. Academic training is not essential. Attending and creating theater are equally valid educations.

The committee will ask you to commit to seeing an average of four plays per month during the season. This is only a minimum; many members see more. If you're doing a show of your own for several weeks, simply see more shows to either side of your show or catch Sunday matinees and front-of-week shows. Many, though not all, productions provide members with complimentary tickets to help reduce the financial burden of participation on the committee.

You choose which shows you attend. However, the committee will ask that one of the shows you see each month be one you would not normally have gone to see, so you can bring a fresh perspective to the table. You will need to join ACoT if you are not already a member. Regular access to e-mail and a computer printer are strongly encouraged.

The committee meets every two months over the course of the season, usually on Monday evenings, to assemble short lists of potential nominees. At the end of the season, the committee distills the final ballot from the short lists. Attending these meetings in person to voice your opinions is essential.

If you are interested in serving, e-mail the committee chair, Steven Fay, or the vice chair, Bruce McCann, whose emails are listed below. (Steve will be on vacation and off the Internet for most of August, but will respond when he gets back.) Please include a phone number. We will contact you to schedule an interview date.
